Derek Laurent

Volunteers Needed @ St Andrews

How long have you been at St Andrews?
About 8 years. It is close to where we live. I like the style of worship in the 10:45 service and the way the spirit of God is present in the church. The people are friendly and caring. The coffee is great too

Where is your most favourite place in New Zealand and overseas?
Matai Bay on the Karekare Peninsula. I've got great memories from earlier years of family camping, fishing and diving.
Overseas: British Columbia in Canada has beautiful lakes picture perfect mountains and a large array of wildlife.

What do you do during the week that occupies your time?
I am a Technology teacher at Whangarei Boys High School and teach boys between 13-16 years old metalwork, graphics and core technology

What get’s you fired up?
The way our country that was founded on Christian principles has gradually, through Government legislation and law changes become more and more anti-Christian.

How do you volunteer and how did you get involved?
God gave me the passion and desire to learn to play the guitar back in 1999, when I was at Teachers College. When I first came to St A's I felt called to join the worship team. It was a huge learning curve as I was an absolute beginner but with nuturing worship leaders that learning has continued.

What's involved?
Being part of a team that loves to play music and sing praises to God. If God has given you a passion and gifting for singing or playing an instrument I encourage you to get involved.

What’s your favourite saying/scripture?

Roms 12: 9 -13 "Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality."
